Excellent essay. Hillman’s work has been resonating deeply with me and I love seeing the ways you both explore and expand upon it. The movement from taking myths literally, to digging into their deeper metaphoric meaning (with a new literalness applied to this discovered “meaning”), to seeing the image as a source of continual meaning… it’s a great example of the unending journey of “seeing through.”

Thanks for this Brian. I've been slowly coming around to this perspective, largely due to your mentorship. I can acknowledge my own desire to try and trap the story through analysis in an attempt to "get on top of things" and feel a sense of control over life and the mystery it entails. The approach you advocate really honors the soul of the story and all its elements. "[Stories] when tended to and kept alive will continue to feed us for generations to come". Love that! Great article!
